Aanii (Hello)! I’m Amanda McLaughlin, an Anishinaabe woman from the Unceded Territory of Wiikwemkoong. I proudly acknowledge that I live, work, and journey on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. As a Creative strategy specialist, my path has been shaped by my heritage, passions, and values. Keep reading to discover how these elements define who I am today and how they guide my work in empowering businesses.
From the start, entrepreneurship and creativity were part of my journey. As kids, my sibling and I sold lemonade and Spice Girls candy with nothing more than a folding table and determination. These ventures weren’t just about treats—they were lessons in creativity, teamwork, and the joy of transforming ideas into impact. They fueled my passion for connecting with people and laid the foundation for the meaningful relationships I build today.
Post-college, I pursued the event industry, starting as an office manager at a catering company. I gained skills in coordination while exploring digital marketing by managing social media. Inspired by creating memorable experiences, I launched an event planning business. Over time, my passion evolved into what I love most: strategizing, crafting marketing campaigns, and empowering businesses through storytelling and connections.

How I did it
Office manager to event planner — these roles allowed me to sharpen my organizational skills and develop expertise in planning and coordination. An interest in digital storytelling sparked as I took on the challenge of managing the catering company’s social media presence. Inspired by my passion for creating memorable experiences, I ventured into entrepreneurship and launched my own event planning business. Through this experience, I learned the importance of building authentic connections and discovered the impact that innovative strategies could have in creating lasting impressions.
As my career progressed, I uncovered a deeper passion for understanding the behind-the-scenes dynamics of businesses. I realized that my true calling lay in developing strategies that drive growth and empower organizations. This led me to embark on a freelance career as a social media manager, working closely with clients to design creative and impactful campaigns. In this role, I honed my ability to craft tailored solutions that aligned with each client’s unique vision. It was during this time that I truly embraced my passion for empowering businesses through storytelling, strategy, and authentic connections.
Building upon years of experience and personal growth, I founded Virtual Spirit Strategy in 2024. More than just a business, Virtual Spirit Strategy is a creative expression of my Indigenous heritage and the values that shape my identity. Rooted in Anishinaabe principles of community, connection, creativity, and empowerment, my work is driven by a commitment to honouring these values in every project I take on. From collaborating with mission-driven organizations to crafting strategies that amplify brands and foster meaningful relationships, I aim to create impactful digital experiences that empower businesses and their communities. Virtual Spirit Strategy embodies the strength and resilience of my ancestors while embracing modern innovation to inspire growth and positive change.
